Through EDU 410 our class has frequently discussed and practiced the art of asking questions in a classroom setting. This type of hands on a profession specific research revealed a lot for us. We found that questions can account for motivation, participation, formative assessment, and engagement. Questions are an all encompassing tool to include your students in the learning, and to express your expected learning outcomes and unit objectives to them. Our studies have also shown that questions are something that will be developed over our professional careers through on the job learning. Questioning is a hard concept to master, especially when attempting to reach all levels of thinking and processing as seen on the above artifact. Using questions as a form of engagement and motivation were also evident in our research. When students are losing interest or focus, asking a question can be the quickest and most effective way to draw them back to the lesson. Using KWL charts or ambiguous questions that make students wonder can account for a useful motivation factor. The use of questioning is really an all purpose means of teaching that can tie together multiple aspects and components of the classroom and lesson.
What I learned through the creation of this artifact were the complex levels of thinking question asking can bring you to. As a beginning teacher question asking will be a hard process, but with time those upper level questions will be a fluent part of my lessons. I also learned that asking questions can be used multi-purposely as discussed in our classes research. The main component of question asking I learned is how important they are to learning; the take your objectives and learning outcomes and materialize them into real practice. This artifact is truly an essential component to my future profession and I will make sure to use questioning on all levels of thinking.
