A behavior contract is something every instructor should keep as a resource for either beginning of the year expectations, or as behavior problems begin to arise. A contract like this assists students with behavioral issues and incorporates them into a positive reinforcement system. This artifact is important because it hold students responsible, accountable, and gets their parents involved and aware of the contract and interventions. This contract is just as important as establishing rules and expectations; this is included in those.
What our research and discussions in EDU 410 have established on the the use of behavior contracts is that can help with the re-framing process. These contracts can make a troubled student compliant and return them to the learning they so crucially need. Our research has also shown that there are many surrounding factors that can cause behavior problems and the need for a behavior contract such as egocentric tendencies, feeling threatened, being provoked, feeling fear, helplessness, frustration, boredom, or feeling isolated. All of these surrounding factors can influence and create behavioral problems. We have also discussed how the use of positive reinforcement and rewards can help promote and institute the success of these contracts. If a behavior is continually disrupting the learning or safe environment of the classroom then a contract should be instilled.
What I learned through the creation and research of behavior contracts is that they are really the first step in behavior intervention. This is how you set and establish expectations and allow students to know the appropriateness of their behaviors. I also learned that these contracts are structured around positive reinforcement and rewards; its a motivating factor. These plans can be utilized by any student with or without disabilities or diagnosed behavioral problems. To retain order and a comfortable classroom this is an extremely useful resource to balance the peace. This artifact is to be used to re-frame behaviors, encourage student success, re-establish a comfortable classroom, and help the continual process of learning in the classroom. This is definitely a resource I will take advantage of in my future.
