This artifact is important to establish a conductive and comfortable classroom environment early on in the school year. Getting acquainted activities allow students the chance to introduce themselves to you, and their peers. Students get to express their interests, goals, hobbies, and beliefs. These things are important to know for teachers so that they can attempt to modify certain aspects of their curriculum to their students each year, learn different learning styles and modalities, and understand students as whole persons. This artifact is something I've experienced in almost every class I've ever been enrolled in, and I find it extremely important. What the research identified about getting acquainted activities is that they are a teachers best chance at learning about their students. Getting acquainted activities are a one stop shop to learn about students interests, learning styles, and preferences to help your class function and transition smoothly. The research also revealed that using multiple forms of these activities is a highly effectively strategy. Putting aside the first one or two classes of the semester to complete worksheets such as the ones in this artifact, as well as doing collaborative activities in class such as sitting in a circle and stating your name and "one thing you want us to know about you," can be an extremely effective strategy. What we learned in class is that these types of activities generally take place at the beginning of the year but aren't limited to it. Advice from our master teacher research stated that finding time each day to ask a few of your students how they are, what they did this weekend, or anything along those lines can have the same effect as beginning of the year activities. The research really stressed the importance of using these strategies to help you and your students collaborate and gain a level of comfort among each other. What I learned from this artifact is that establishing a comfortable and conductive classroom, you need to be highly acquainted with your students. I thought that the only way to do this was through work sheets, but through further research, discussion, and thinking back to my own education I realized how many strategies there really are to get acquainted with students. I have experienced multiple hands on activities that were fun, inviting, and made me want to go to that specific class. My hopes are to apply these strategies that I have learned to my future classroom and motivate my students to feel the same way I had. I learned that using a conglomeration of strategies such as work sheets and hands on activities is more effective than using just one way. I also learned that this artifact is a good way to show students that you care about them past their academics. Overall, this artifact is one that I will 100% use in my future career.
